What are Calcium and Vitamin D?
Calcium is a mineral needed for the maintenance of normal bones and teeth and must be absorbed from the foods we eat. To fully absorb and utilise calcium, we need Vitamin D. We all understand the importance of feeding children milk for its calcium content, but calcium is needed in larger amounts as we grow older due to a loss of bone mineral density. Known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’, Vitamin D is found in small amounts in food, but the majority (90 per cent) is made by the body on exposure to UVB sunlight.
